The current federal minimum efficiency standard for heat pumps and central AC in the Southeast is 15 SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2, updated standard effective 2023). Equipment sold before 2023 was rated under the original SEER scale.
SEER2 ratings run somewhat lower numerically than SEER ratings for the same equipment — a 16 SEER unit is approximately equivalent to a 15.2 SEER2 unit. When comparing quotes for new equipment, confirm that all bids use the same rating scale.
The payback period for a higher-efficiency unit depends on usage. Wake County’s climate produces long cooling seasons — May through September with significant AC load, and winter heating that varies by year.
